Exploring the Ford Explorer EV

October 27th, 2023 by

Ford, the American multinational automaker, recently announced that it will be redesigning its popular SUV, the Explorer. The new Explorer is expected to launch sometime next year (2024) with a complete overhaul. The upcoming model will offer an electric powertrain option, which is great news for those who are environmentally conscious. The decision to incorporate electrification is in line with Ford’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. The new Explorer will boast several advanced features, including state-of-the-art safety systems, advanced driver assistance technologies, and a modern infotainment system.

The Explorer EV

The Explorer EV is distinct from the regular Explorer as it utilizes an EV platform from Volkswagen while still retaining the Explorer’s features. Ford has not yet announced when the Explorer EV will be available in the U.S. market. The European version will come in two trims, Explorer and Explorer Premium, and is expected to cost around $48,000 (plus destination fee). Despite using Volkswagen’s BEV platform, Ford has managed to create a unique look for the Explorer EV’s exterior. The front of the vehicle, which doesn’t have the traditional grille, is inspired by the Mustang Mach-E, while the “Explorer” name bar on the front serves as a visual cue. Additionally, the EV has blacked-out A-pillars and rear pillars, which help create a “floating roof” effect, emphasized by the kicked-up beltline, giving it a sportier appearance compared to the regular Explorer.

The Explorer EV is a stylish and spacious vehicle that can accommodate up to five passengers. Its futuristic interior design is especially notable, with a sleek and modern rear bench and a Soundbar that includes a floating speaker and LED strip at the top of the dashboard. The Explorer EV also boasts a state-of-the-art stereo system, wireless device charging, and seamless integration with mobile apps. The cabin is designed with comfort in mind, featuring sport front seats, heated and massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and multi-zone automatic climate control. With Ford’s connected app, the Explorer EV can even be pre-warmed before you arrive. The infotainment system is equally impressive, with the SYNC Move setup included as standard on all Explorer EVs. The 15-inch touchscreen can be adjusted for optimal viewing comfort and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as easy control of other vehicle systems and menus.

Ford has not yet released any information regarding the battery, motors, output, or range of the upcoming Explorer EV. The company has confirmed that it will be available in both rear-wheel-drive (single-motor) and all-wheel-drive (dual-motor) configurations. As this mid-size electric SUV is based on a Volkswagen platform, it is possible that it may have some similarities with the VW ID.4, which offers battery packs rated at 58-kWh and 77-kWh. Assuming this is the case, the Explorer EV may produce 200 horsepower in RWD form and 300 horsepower in AWD form. Ford has stated that the official driving range will be announced closer to the on-sale date. The Explorer EV’s battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in as little as 25 minutes thanks to DC fast charging.
