First Came the Ford Lightning, Now Here Comes the Thunder

Gray Ford Ranger Thunder Pickup Open Water

Earlier this year (2022), the Blue Oval City gave us some quality time with the Ford F-150 Lightning. Although it’s impossible not to fall hard for the electric pickup, Ford is ready to knock us off our heels. The magic pony automaker recently placed an application for trademark filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The American Automaker apparently gave us enough time with the Lightning to prepare for the Thunder. Ford applied for patents for  the “F-150 Thunder,” “Ranger Thunder,” and “Maverick Thunder.” Furthermore, the automaker filed for the same applications through the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

There are no further details about how the automaker intends to employ the trademarks. Nevertheless, we have enough time to speculate until we discover more about the Thunder trademark. For instance, the Thunder name may be systemic to the F-150 Lightning. Another probability is that the Thunder name may introduce a mightier plug-in hybrid. In addition to the powertrain, the rumor mill implies that the Ford Ranger may acquire a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Yet, the F-150 and Maverick already come fully equipped with hybrid engines, plus there’s been no mention of a plug-in option. Another exciting possibility is that whatever hybrid powertrain the Ford Ranger acquires, so will the Bronco. The Ford Bronco is a powerful competitor compared to the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. Last we checked, Ford didn’t file a trademark patent for the “Bronco Thunder.”

The trademark likely has nothing to do with the trio of Thunder pickup’s output. So, the Thunder lineup may serve as an appearance package. It wasn’t that long ago that the Blue Oval revealed the limited-edition Ford Ranger Thunder for the European market in 2020. The 2020 Ranger Thunder displayed a spicy look with dark Sea Gray paint, red accents, 18-inch black alloy wheels, and Ebony black bumpers and skid plates. In addition to the zesty appeal, the 2020 Ranger Thunder featured Ebony Leather seats. Therefore, we may acquire the same stormy thunderous aesthetic for all three pickups.

The Blue Oval has yet to confirm the idea of assembling a more street-oriented pickup. However, who will challenge Ford’s intentions of a commanding appeal with performance enhancements and enriched on-road tires. So, there’s uncertainty surrounding when the three Thunder trucks will arrive. Nonetheless, we anticipate the Thunder trucks dominating the 2023 model year. We expect to learn more about Ford’s Thunder trucks by autumn, so sometime between September and December 2022.
