The first quarter of 2021 went to combustion-engine vehicles. Fast forward to the second half, and automakers segued away from sedans onto EVs without a hitch. Another priority on the to-do list was constructing a bridge between today’s automotive world and tomorrow’s electric future with the plug-in hybrid.

Every legacy automaker shared these sentiments, but few rose to action like Ford Motor Company. Ford excelled while turning a profit despite the formidable challenges. Thus, the Blue Oval is Forbes Wheels Automaker for 2022.

Under Jim Farley, Ford’s new CEO, the company achieved a $20 share price for the first time in twenty years. Moreover, after 14 months of leadership, Ford’s share price tripled, suggesting investors firmly believed in Farley’s vision as the industry’s number 2 or 3 electric car maker. Tesla is the number one electric car maker, with Volkswagen Group, General Motors, and Stelllantis close behind.

The SUV Extravaganza

It’s only been two years, and the Blue Oval has already unleashed three highly regarded SUVs. First, the Mustang Mach-E took on the Mustang moniker and an electric motor and comprised a magnificent electric crossover. Next is the astonishingly off-road capable Ford Bronco Sport, Forbes Wheels Crossover of the Year for 2021. Last is the Ford Escape, which recently received its fourth-generation refresh. The Escape provides consumers with excellent mileage, several different powertrain options, such as the hybrid and performance variant.

Sedan-less Lineup

Ford is one of three automakers that doesn’t construct a single sedan. The compact Focus stopped production in 2018. The Ford Taurus and Fiesta were discontinued by 2019. The Ford Fusion was the last to go in 2020. Most luxury automakers look for SUVs to fulfill that role.

Ford’s Future

Ford is looking onward and never gazing in the rearview mirror. Ford CEO Jim Farley reported that the company intends to double EV production to 600,000 units by 2023. Ford manufactured 4.2 million vehicles in 2020. So by 2023, if Ford constructs 5 million cars, it will bring the automakers total to 20% EVs. Ford and General Motors ‘ shared ambition are the number 2 seed behind Tesla. Although many analysts argue that Volkswagen Group has a better chance at the number 2 slot, Ford rides high on the success of current and pending EVs. So whatever the future holds, the Blue Oval sustains a great place in the present.
