Ford Motor Co. Files New Patent for Futuristic AirBags

Over the past several months, Ford has filed many airbag-related patents. These Blue Oval stamped patents include a wide range of ideas, such as a side airbag with adaptive positioning, inflatable devices inside a vehicle cabin, a seat back-mounted overhead airbag, a seatback-supported airbag system, door-mounted airbags, selectively inflatable side airbags, an airbag between the cabin and cargo area, and a roof-mounted airbag, among others. Ford’s most recent patent filed is a reclined vehicle occupant airbag, which adds to the growing mountain of airbag-related innovations.

With the reclined airbag patent, the American automaker is looking forward to a future where fully autonomous vehicles become commonplace and equipped with beds that passengers can sleep in while the car drives them to their destination. In such a scenario, there would be a need for a new type of airbag that could protect occupants while they are reclined and potentially asleep. It is uncertain whether this idea will come to fruition, but it’s clear that Ford is already considering the future of autonomous driving and passenger safety.

The Ford patent presents several different layouts for airbags in self-driving vehicles equipped with beds. Each layout protects the occupant from injury in case of an accident. The airbags would inflate and surround the person in some capacity, much like traditional airbags, to prevent them from colliding with other parts of the interior or flying around the cabin.
