Is There a New Off-Road ‘Rattler’ in the Works for Ford?

Ford has been in the spotlight recently, and they plan to keep it that way. As Ford continues to reshape the world of pickups, its aim remains steady. Ford has been consistent in releasing powerful new vehicles and trims and it doesn’t seem like they are backing down anytime soon with the next generation of premium trucks. Having recently revealed their all-new 2022 Maverick hybrid pickup, Ford is once again stirring up excitement. Using the name Rattler, Ford has started to generate enthusiasm for its latest innovation, though what this entails only Ford knows. The only information currently available is the name Rattler. Striking and fierce, the name has certainly raised eyebrows as thoughts of the deadly rattlesnake come to mind. Swift and versatile, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Ford is looking to mirror the reptile with a powerful off-road vehicle. The question is whether Ford will opt for a new vehicle or go for a bold new trim.

Filing for the Rattler Trademark

Ford first filed for the Rattler trademark on June 28th, 2021. According to a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) report, Ford intends to use the Rattler Trademark for a variety of categories including, “automobiles, pick-up trucks, electric vehicles, sport utility vehicles, off-road vehicles, and structural parts.”

This doesn’t answer too many questions, but it does stir interest. As fans and enthusiasts wait expectantly, many have taken to theorizing as to what new vehicle or trim Ford could have in mind for their next release. Some believe it could be a new powerful off-road vehicle while others theorize it may be a trim of their latest 2022 Ford Maverick. Another possibility is a trim of the powerful F-150 Raptor, though this is not as likely as Ford has stated that they will release a higher performance Raptor R. sometime in 2022. This powerful, revamped F-150 Raptor trim is slated to come equipped with a supercharged V-8 engine.

As theories continue, it should be noted that Ford likes to utilize special names for its special vehicles and trims. In Europe, for example, Ford applied the Raptor name to its smaller Ranger pickup trucks. One theory that sticks out is that the Rattler will be left for a trim of the all-new Ford 2022 Maverick. A compact hybrid pickup, Ford’s 2022 Maverick is to come equipped with a 2.5L full hybrid engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This new compact hybrid pickup will definitely spur attention so the possibility of a new trim to match would be a great use for the Rattler name. Only time will tell what Ford has planned.
