The Very First EV of the Year Award Goes to the All-New Ford Mustang Mach-E

Imagine beating out the innovator of electric education– that’s what the Ford Mustang Mach-E did!

Car and Driver magazine just named the Mustang Mach-E as its first 2021 EV of the year. In addition, Car and Driver have been deemed the most respected and opinionated automotive magazine in the world. 

The Mustang Mach-E was up against Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Polestar 2, Nissan Leaf Plus, Tesla Model Y Performance, Kia Niro EV, Audi E-Tron, Porsche Taycan 4S, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Tesla Model S Long Range Plus. 

Car and Driver had intentions of testing and analyzing every EV on the market, but several models hadn’t launched in time. Those models were the Hummer EV, BMW i4, and the 2022 Chevy Bolt. In addition, Car and Driver did not include the Tesla Model X in the tests due to its low sales.  

Car and Driver performed rigorous tests over three weeks. First, a 75-mile-per-hour driving range test was performed, seeing how far each vehicle would travel on a full charge. Car and Driver also took the cars on a 1,000 mile round trip from Car and Driver’s Michigan and Virginia headquarters. 

Quality issues hindered Tesla’s Model S, Model 3, and Model Y. The cruise control on the Model Y just stopped with no warning. Editor in Chief of Car and Driver Sharon Carty also noted that the touchscreen system stopped working shortly after receiving the car for testing. The Model 3 had a large gap around the hood. Lastly, the Model S contained 3,600 miles, yet its front motor just failed. Since the Model S needed to be repaired, the car continued the test but was disqualified from winning the award.  

Tesla’s Model S, Model Y, and Model 3 finished the trip first, second, and third. While the Mustang Mach-E came in fourth. Non-Tesla charging stations presented a few technicalities; the charges didn’t work or did not charge as fast as they should’ve. 

All in all, what made the Mustang Mach-E the champion was the vehicle’s appeal. The car conveyed the power to convert gasoline guzzlers to electric car crusaders. In addition, the Mach-E is a crossover with a reasonably competitive price. Although Ford drafted several aspects of Mach-E’s interior design from Tesla’s interior design,Car and Driver Eric Tongwall noted that the Mach-E’s cabin contained premium materials and the build quality made the more expensive luxury cars look like rip-offs.
