2023 Ford Explorer Vs. KIA Telluride

Blue Ford Explorer SUV

Here’s how the 2023 Ford Explorer and 2023 Kia Telluride compare performance, gas mileage, towing, off-road capabilities, and safety.

Performance

Regarding engine options, the Ford Explorer dominates by a landslide. The Explorer’s engines include the 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4, which forges 300 horsepower. Then there’s the 3.3-liter V6 hybrid, which generates 318 horsepower, and the monstrous 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6, which yields 365 horsepower. The Ford SUV doesn’t limit its capacity or capabilities with just three engines, there’s also the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 for the high-performing ST Explorer, and it generates a wig-snatching 400 horsepower.

At the same time, the Kia Telluride comes equipped with the mundane 3.8-liter V6 engine that yields 291 horsepower.

Gas Mileage

Another area the Ford Explorer dominates is in fuel-efficiency. The ICE-engined Explorer holds an estimated fuel economy of up to 24 mpg combined. At the same time, the Explorer Hybrid delivers up to 27 mpg combined. Furthermore, the Kia Telluride fails to deliver, even if the gas station is nearby, with an estimated fuel consumption of 23 mpg combined.

Towing Capacity

The towing capability was a nail-biter, but the Explorer turned out to be the true victor. The Ford SUV harbors a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 lbs, whereas the Kia Telluride can’t exceed 5,500 lbs.

Off-Road Capability

Regarding the off-road excursion, no SUV does it better than the Ford SUV. Even though the Kia Telluride renders an all-wheel drive powertrain. The Explorer is well-prepared for the adventure ahead with a sophisticated four-wheel drive system. Additionally, the Ford Explorer provides a higher ground clearance than the Kia Telluride, 8.7 inches, compared to the Kia SUV’s 8.4 inches. Furthermore, the Kia Telluride offers the ruggedly capable X-line and X-Pro trims, but they fail to compete with the Ford Explorer’s Timberline trim

Safety

The Ford Explorer retakes the cake with the 2022 model year earning the Insurance Institute of Highway and Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award. At the same time, the Kia Telluride recieved the IIHS’s second-tier Top Safety Pick award. Safety is a no-brainer regarding family and friends, besides who would feel safe in a second-place vehicle?
