Ford to Team with Walmart and Argo AI for Autonomous Delivery Service
Ford has been working to transform the automotive industry. The Blue Oval has premiered electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and now autonomous vehicles. Ford will be partnering with Walmart and the self-driving startup company Argo AI to launch a new autonomous vehicle delivery service. Ford clearly has their sights on the future and the technology surrounding it. The automaker has made headway with its all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E, two vehicles that have spurred a lot of excitement about the potential of electric vehicles. Now Ford is moving toward another sphere in the auto world as it attempts to make progress on the next iteration of vehicle technology, autonomous vehicles. Â
Are Autonomous Vehicles Next Up for Ford, Walmart, and Argo AI?
Ford is turning its attention toward yet another revolutionary technology within the automotive industry. Autonomous vehicles have been a topic for decades with many speculating on their ability to transform travel. Although the technology is still a work in progress, Ford will be partnering with a self-driving startup called Argo AI as well as the corporation giant Walmart. The team will focus on creating an autonomous vehicle delivery service that will hopefully meet consumers’ demands and expectations for same-day or next-day delivery. The service is expected to begin the testing phase later in 2021. It will first launch in several select cities including Miami, Austin, and Washington D.C.
Ford will be providing its self-driving vehicles while Walmart and Argo AI will be providing the framework for the vehicles to communicate and deliver products. Walmart had previously partnered with GM and their Cruise self-driving system, but it seems the corporate giant has sought favor with the Blue Oval instead. Walmart will utilize its online ordering platform in combination with Argo AI’s self-driving system in order to route orders and schedule package deliveries. Together, the three companies will work to ensure quick, efficient delivery by way of autonomous delivery. On this collaboration, Tom Ward the senior vice president of last-mile delivery at Walmart said:
“This collaboration will further our mission to get products to the homes of our customers with unparalleled speed,” said Tom Ward.
The three companies will provide more efficient service to urban cities with higher demands for goods and services. Walmart customers will be able to place online orders of groceries and other popular items without worrying about when or whether they will arrive. This service will be the change that transforms delivery for years to come. We will have to wait to see how effective the service is, but it seems to be the next big shift for Ford.
