Four Factories on the Ford Horizon
Everyone should experience a one-night stand, but it seems Ford has had their fill, and they’re ready to pursue something long-term. Ford’s actively seeking a long-term commitment with its electric cars and trucks with billions of dollars invested in constructing three battery factories and an electric car plant. The factories will be built in the United States, creating 11,000 jobs for the next four years.
Ford detailed the investment as an opportunity to construct over one million electric vehicles annually by 2025. The automaker’s announcement is the first of many multibillion-dollar deals that proclaims the phase-out of gasoline-powered cars and trucks to electric cars and trucks in place of climate change. Climate control is much needed, with transportation such as cars and trucks responsible for 30 percent of U.S greenhouse gas emissions.Â
“I think the industry is on a fast road to electrification and those who aren’t are going to be left behind.”- Executive Chairman of Ford, William C. Ford Jr.Â
The pressure is on Ford and automakers alike, not just from growing environmental concerns but also from the ultimate threat, Tesla, the alpha and omega of electric vehicles. Tesla has become the most valuable automaker in the world thus far, with 800,000 electric cars sold this year alone.Â
Kentucky and Tennessee receive battery plants from a joint venture of Ford and South Koreas, SK Innovation. The companies will also build an assembly plant at the Tennessee location to keep up with the demand for its electric pickup trucks. Ford provided $7 billion and SK Innovation $4.4 billion for the investment.Â
Other big wigs such as GM are also pouring billions into the battery business. GM anticipates ceasing internal combustion production by the end of 2035. Ford envisions its electric model to make up 40 percent of its production by 2030.Â
Even those automakers afraid to delve into the electric car arena have changed the name of their song. Toyota Motor altered its strategy with plans to spend billions throughout the decade building battery factories and selling two million electric cars a year before 2030. Previously the ‘Let’s Go Places’ empire promised to focus on hybrid cars and trucks with reluctance to fully electric vehicles.Â
The ‘Blue Oval City’ will be built in Stanton, Tennessee, stretching six square miles. The Tennessee headquarters will staff 6,000 people to a home for battery recycling operations in addition to the truck and battery factories. This site receives an investment of $5.6 billion from Ford and SK Innovation.
Glendale, Kentucky, receives two Ford plants. Glendale is 50 miles south of Louisville, generating 5,000 jobs with an investment of $5.8 billion. The batteries made at the plants will produce Ford and Lincoln vehicles. Ford already employs 13,000 people for a plant in the Louisville area.Â
Even though there’s a double down, the Mustang Mach-E has taken a nice amount of market share from Tesla. The F-150 Lightning received 150,000 reservations, to which Ford responded with an investment of $250 million at the Dearborn, Michigan plant and an increased potential of 450 jobs. Ford’s EV ambitions may seem far-fetched, but one thing’s for sure, the demand for Ford’s EVs is not.Â
