Back in March (2022), Ford announced that it would split its business, one side focusing on electric vehicles and the other would concentrate on gas-powered cars. The new segment will become Model E, with the automaker looking for new battery production sources. Additionally, Ford discussed further details such as battery production capacity and the raw materials essential to powering all of the automaker’s electric vehicles. The Blue Oval City set a goal for 2023 to have enough battery supply to support the production of 270,000 Mustang Mach-Es, 150,000 Transit EVs, 150,000 F-150 Lightnings, and 30,000 new mid-size SUVs destined for the European market.

The Ford Run rate also revealed that the automaker would update the batteries inside the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning. The automaker will add lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFP). Additionally, the lithium batteries will come from the Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) for the Mustang Mach-E by 2023 and the F-150 Lightning in 2024.

The Blue Oval assures that its electric vehicles will become available alongside batteries with the existing nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) chemistry, which parallels Tesla’s approach.

Ford will assume the same approach as Tesla, but the legendary automaker will employ the new batteries in its standard range vehicles. Moreover, since the automaker will install its lithium batteries inside its standard range vehicles, this is where Ford demonstrated its sophistication because the battery is inexpensive and lacks energy density.

The Blue Oval says it has 100 percent of its battery cell production capacity, essential to constructing 600,000 electric cars and trucks by late 2023. Ford’s battery confidence stems from its new packs and doubled capacity at LG Energy Solution’s production facility in Wroclaw, Poland. Furthermore, the automaker also has support from an additional cell production capacity from SK on.

Further down the automaker’s road to glory, Ford set a goal of building 2 million electric vehicles worldwide by late 2026. Additionally, the automaker announced a separate non-binding MOU with the battery conglomerate CATL. Ford expressed plans to explore other cooperations to build batteries across North America, Europe, and China. The automaker has not forfeited its battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee, plus its agreements with mining companies to directly source the essential raw materials, particularly the nickel needed for 2026 and beyond. Moreover, the automaker pledged an investment of $50 billion in EVs through 2026.
