Ford has officially launched a fresh chapter by beginning mass production of the all-electric Explorer at its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) facility in Europe. This milestone comes after a transformative $2 billion investment revolutionizing a historic plant into a futuristic manufacturing marvel.

The electric Explorer is the trailblazing model debuting at the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center, representing a monumental leap forward in delivering a new generation of high-quality electric passenger vehicles for Europe. Anticipation is soaring as a sleek sports crossover, Ford’s second EV, is set to be revealed soon, with production kicking off in Cologne later this year (2024). .

The new all-electric Explorer is a captivating blend of German engineering and American style. It features premium specifications, including cutting-edge battery electric powertrains for zero tailpipe emissions and an astounding range of over 372 miles (600 km) on a single charge.

A Glimpse into the Factory of the Future

The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center is a beacon of technological innovation, equipped with advanced AI and an orchestrated symphony of hundreds of state-of-the-art robots. These robots perform welding, cutting, dusting, painting, and fusing tasks and operate in a complex ballet to achieve unparalleled precision, efficiency, and quality.

At the heart of this cutting-edge facility is a “digital twin” that meticulously monitors and supports production line operators to ensure top-tier quality standards. A new control center oversees the entire assembly process in real-time, tracking every part and nut at each workstation. This digital twin is showcased on a giant touchscreen, offering comprehensive information on tooling, material delivery, work safety, and more. Small touchscreens at each workstation enable employees to provide additional insights into their tasks.

Leading the Way in Sustainable Production

The Cologne Electric Vehicle Center is one of Ford’s most efficient vehicle assembly plants worldwide, significantly reducing emissions, water usage, and energy consumption.

Ford is unwavering in its commitment to a carbon neutrality pathway for the Cologne Electric Vehicle Center. With production underway, the automaker will meticulously monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and independently certify them according to the latest international standards. Ford will continuously enhance carbon efficiency and reduce GHG emissions to a minimal residual level as part of this carbon neutrality journey.

Moreover, the facility operates entirely on certified renewable electricity and biomethane. Ford Motor Company is ambitiously targeting carbon neutrality across its European production facilities, logistics, and direct suppliers by 2035.

With the all-electric Ford Explorer leading the charge, Ford’s electrifying future in Europe is just beginning!
